20 things to know before visiting Fiji

The useful, calm-start guide for a more meaningful Fiji: village etiquette, island timing, water days and what to pack.

For village visits, keep a light shirt or wrap in your day bag so you can cover shoulders and knees when appropriate. Your guide will brief the group before arrival.

Choose reef-safe sunscreen and apply it well before a swim. A rash shirt is an easy extra layer for longer reef time and boat days.

Put swimmers, a small towel, water and dry clothes into one soft day bag. It makes boat transfers and cave-swim days simpler.

For a kava ceremony, arrive with curiosity rather than nerves: follow your hosts' lead, accept only what you are comfortable with and enjoy the conversation.

Tropical afternoons are easier with a hat, refillable bottle and one light rain layer. The aim is comfort, not carrying a huge kit.

If you are less confident in the water, say so early. Guided snorkelling is much more enjoyable when the crew can help you choose the right pace.
